In this episode, Jason introduces the listener to four Canadian authors and their respective ministries and recent books.
Aaron White
Jason’s conversation with Aaron White explores his ministry on the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. The DTES is a neighbourhood plagued by extreme poverty, addiction, and trafficking. But that is not the primary story that Aaron hopes to tell. Overwhelming the obvious brokenness of the DTES, is the tangible presence of God, the grace of the Gospel, and the beauty of image bearers who are known and loved by their Creator — friends and neighbours who are, in many ways, our best teachers about the above spiritual realities.
Aaron’s book describes the pain of addiction and the on-going opioid crisis but, more than that, he peeks under the surface of addiction by exposing its root in unprocessed pain. He invites the reader to journey through their own pain and embrace the beatitude community that Jesus describes in the Sermon on the Mount.
In the end, Recovering is a robust, holistic work that is a must-read for any person seeking wholeness and healing through the person and presence of Jesus and the community he invites us to experience. Check out Aaron’s book here.
Alastair Sterne
Alastair is a pastor and a church planter in Vancouver, BC. His congregation St. Peter Fireside, has been serving and loving the city for the last nine years. Their conversation dives into Sterne’s story of being called into ministry with his wife and how he ended up in the city of Vancouver.
Jason also invites Alastair to unpack the central message of his book, Rhythms for Life. Most books are birthed in the context of a community, but this work was intentionally written by a group of people committed to the way of Jesus. Shaped and refined within a local congregation these pages outline, explain, and apply spiritual practices to the core of our identity and formation as a people. Andy Steiger
Andy Steiger is the director of Apologetics Canada. He has recently written a book with Zondervan titled, Reclaimed.
In this interview, Jason and Andy discuss the importance and relevance of Christian apologetics, which involves providing reasons for our hope in Jesus with gentleness, respect, and cultural nuance. The conversation unpacks some of the resources that Apologetics Canada has produced like The Thinking Series and The Human Project.
The dialogue pivots to discuss Andy’s book Reclaimed, Zombie Culture, and the reality of dehumanization that is rampant in our culture and world. His analysis is poignant and sobering, but it prepares the reader to receive the Gospel as the only hope for restoring our humanity in a dehumanized world. Brett Ullman
In this interview, Jason speaks with Brett Ullman. Brett is a former elementary school teacher. He attends Sanctus Church in Ontario and is a well-known communicator addressing issues of mental health, pornography, sexuality, media, and parenting across Canada.
Ullman’s newest book is on parenting. It has the length and the depth of a textbook — learned, comprehensive, and deep, but also readable and practical. These pages cover different parenting styles, how to spend meaningful time with children, clear communication, unconditional love, and beneficial discipline that instructs more than it punishes. All of these topics are explored alongside conversations such as engaging media, mental health, substance addiction, sexuality, and loneliness.
The end result is both a definitive study and a down-to-earth guide for parents navigating raising children in a culture that doesn’t reinforce Christian values or promote human flourishing in a right relationship with God.
