Darrell Johnson on the Importance of Preaching and Prayer in COVID-19

Darrell Johnson

Darrell Johnson has been preaching Jesus Christ and His gospel for over 50 years. He has served a number of Presbyterian congregations in California, Union Church of Manila in the Philippines, and the historic First Baptist Church in the heart of Vancouver, Canada. Darrell has also taught preaching for Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, Regent College and Carey Theological College in Vancouver, British Columbia, and is now serving as Teaching Fellow at Regent.

In addition to writing a major work on preaching, “The Glory of Preaching: Participating in God’s Transformation of the World,” many of his sermon series have been published in book form, including “Fifty-Seven Words That Change the Word: A Journey Through the Lord’s Prayer,” and “Discipleship on the Edge: An Expository Journey through the Book of Revelation.”

I’m wondering what kind of beautiful, theological reflection could emerge from preachers who have been forced to be still.

Darrell has recently written two articles in response to the COVID-19 pandemic that he referenced in Episode 2.

  1. What would I preach in light of COVID-19

  2. Praying Boldly - Why the Church is perhaps reluctant to pray more boldly in this time

Darrell has also published a variety of well-thought-out, theologically practical books that are available now for purchase including, but not limited to:

  1. Discipleship on the Edge: An Expository Journey Through the Book of Revelation - In Discipleship on the Edge, Darrell Johnson drives home the challenging and practical message of Revelation in thirty carefully crafted sermons. Paying careful attention to the original context of Revelation and the circumstances surrounding its composition, Johnson shows that the book is not a "crystal ball" but rather a "discipleship manual."

  2. Experiencing the Trinity - In Experiencing the Trinity Darrell Johnson shows that the doctrine of the Trinity, sometimes seen to be a hopeless puzzle, is not only at the heart of biblical Christianity, but that it is also at the centre of Christian experience.

  3. 57 Words that Change the World: A Journey Through the Lord’s Prayer - A mere fifty-seven words in the original Greek, the Lord's Prayer gathers up all of life and brings it before God. In eight stirring meditations, Darrell Johnson shows how the Lord's Prayer sums up the essence of Christian faith and, when prayed in faith, draws into the Triune God's work of transforming the world.

The peace of God that surpasses all understanding… this is the peace that you can’t think yourself into.
